Pastor Theo recalls how in the early days of American Idol, a reality singing competition, the show would frequently highlight someone who thought they were a great singer. Often the show would video a person talking about their dreams to be a professional singer and how people around them (usually family members) admired their singing. Then the audition would roll, and it became obvious that the person was undeniably terrible—not even able to sing in tune. You know, the person who can’t carry a tune in a bucket!
Reality check! Cringe. In that moment, many fans felt second-hand embarrassment. In our Stories that Speak series this week, we will look at a reality check for a young man recorded in Matthew 19:16-30. He’s not alone as we watch his embarrassing moment. Come this Sunday as we consider Jesus’ radical call to those who follow Him. Maybe we need a reality check of our own.
